Dr. Trish Hatch Awarded Professor Emeritus Status
Our President and CEO, Trish Hatch, PhD, was recently awarded “professor emeritus” status from San Diego State University (SDSU). Dr. Hatch, who retired from SDSU last summer after 15 years, received a personal letter announcing the award.
“It is a pleasure to inform you that the Senate of San Diego State University voted to award you the title of Emeritus Professor in the Department of Counseling and School Psychology,” wrote Salvador Hector Ochoa, provost and senior vice president of SDSU. “This honor is granted to you in recognition of your years of service to the university and your significant contributions to its growth in excellence and stature.
“On behalf of the entire San Diego State community, I congratulate you on this honor and thank you for your service to our university and its students,” he continued. “I hope the privileges afforded by your emeritus status will allow you to continue to be an active participant in our university community.”
Recession-Proof School Counseling: Strategies During Uncertain Times
With the onset of COVID-19, the world has never experienced a school shutdown on such a scale. Most predictions indicate we’re in it for the long haul – anywhere from the next 12-18 months – until greater testing and a vaccine are available. As a former school counselor who now provides professional learning and consultation services nationally, I understand the legitimacy and identity issues that school counselors may face, especially in the midst of this crisis, where so much focus has been on the role of teachers in a new virtual learning world. By recession-proofing school counseling programs now, school counselors can secure their job relevance later.
According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), students are out of school nationwide in 177 countries, representing over 72% of the world’s student population. Edweek also reported that as of May 2, 2020, 45 states, four U.S. territories, and the District of Columbia, have ordered or recommended school building closures for the rest of the academic year. This impacts approximately 47.9 million public school students.
April 2020: Hatching Results Partners With COELSC and the California Association of School Counselors
Hatching Results is actively supporting school counselors and administrators through our partnerships with County Offices of Education Leadership for School Counseling (COELSC) and California Association of School Counselors (CASC). COELSC was quick to respond to school closures by developing a School Counselor Virtual Toolkit. Our team provided resources, co-constructed a sample letter to families, and collaborated to develop the toolkit, which was launched on March 30th to all 58 county offices of education across California.
Participation from 31 states spells success for NSCLC 2020
Hatching Results, LLC held their third annual National School Counseling Leadership Conference (NSCLC) February 27-29, at Paradise Point Resort and Spa, located on Mission Bay in San Diego.
While Hatching Results generally focuses their year-round professional development on school counselors, this conference is directed at those who lead school counselors; the principals, assistant principals, district office leaders, and those school counselors working and aspiring to lead within their school systems.
“This year was our largest conference so far, in terms of both number of attendees and sessions offered,” said Whitney Triplett, Director of Professional Development at Hatching Results. “We were very excited to see a huge increase in the number of administrators attending - in fact, they were the majority of our conference attendees this year.” 96% of overall conference evaluation respondents agree that this conference will help them to be a better school counselor leader/administrator and 97% agree that they would recommend this conference to others.
They built it and the administrators came: Inaugural conference for leadership of school counseling profession a great success
On March 5 and 6, Hatching Results, LLC convened their first leadership symposium, which took place at the Ayres Hotel and Conference Center in Costa Mesa, California. Named the National School Counseling Leadership Conference, the two-day inaugural event drew 175 attendees from all over the country.
The conference focused on the professional development of school administrators, including superintendents, board members, district employees and other area leaders, and was the first of its kind.

Short Video Demonstrating Multi-Tiered, Multi-Domain System of Supports
The silent video below is an example how the Multi-Tiered, Multi-Domain System of Supports (MTMDSS) works within the school setting, and the description below can be used to talk through the MTMDSS framework within a comprehensive school counseling program.
Multi-Tiered, Multi-Domain System of Supports by Trish Hatch, PhD
The MTMDSS is a framework (See Figure 1) specifically for school counseling programs to organize a continuum of core instruction and interventions to meet students’ needs with the goals of: 1) Ensuring all students receive developmentally appropriate instruction; 2) Maximizing student achievement; and 3) Increasing the social, emotional, and behavioral competencies of students...
