Dr. Trish Hatch to Receive CASC Lifetime Achievement Award
We are thrilled to announce that Dr. Trish Hatch, our Founder, has been selected as this year’s recipient of the Dr. Loretta Aday Whitson Lifetime Achievement Award from the California Association of School Counselors (CASC). This esteemed award recognizes Dr. Hatch’s extraordinary contributions and unwavering commitment to the field of school counseling over the course of her distinguished career.
Dr. Hatch is the co-author of the original ASCA National Model®, first published in 2003 after an extensive collaboration with her co-author Judy Bowers and national leaders of the ASCA Model Task Force. A landmark document for the profession, it operationalized the ASCA National Standards and served as a framework for comprehensive school counseling programs.
After co-authoring the ASCA National Model, Dr. Hatch's impact on the profession continued as she developed one of the finest Master’s in School Counseling programs in the state (and perhaps the nation) at San Diego State University (SDSU). Several students who graduated from SDSU’s school counseling program under her tutelage have earned doctorates, and many now hold powerful and influential leadership positions throughout California and the nation. In addition, the program was uplifted when Dr. Hatch co-led a convening at SDSU to support the White House's College Opportunity Agenda and the First Lady's Reach Higher Initiative.
Dr. Hatch spent many years in Sacramento advocating for school counselors. She was highly active in influencing and modifying state legislation in support of school counseling. Her ultimate goal was to create a mandate for school counseling so that every child could have access to a professional school counselor, something she wished she would have had when she was a student. This is still her dream. Few know that her advocacy in state politics in 1999 led to the first state legislation in years that provided funding for school counseling - AB 1708 - the $100 million Carl Washington School Safety and Violence Prevention Act, which followed the tragic school shootings at Columbine High School in Colorado.
Dr. Hatch’s ambition has always been to empower school counselors to be the best they can be, and her desire to improve and legitimize the school counseling profession led to the creation of Hatching Results, the premier professional development company for school counselors. Through her leadership, Hatching Results has continued to expand the number of districts receiving professional development and consulting services to improve school counseling programs, the majority of which are in California. Hatching Results has doubled in reach in the last three years because districts are hungry for high-quality professional development on designing, implementing, and evaluating comprehensive school counseling programs to best serve diverse student needs.
We are grateful to have a leader like Trish Hatch and encouraged by her recognition from CASC. She has profoundly shaped the landscape of school counseling, inspiring countless educators and impacting the lives of students across California. She will be celebrated alongside her peers for her remarkable achievements at the Awards Dinner during the upcoming CASC Fall Annual Conference on Wednesday, October 23rd. Please join us in congratulating Trish on this honor!
