April 2017 — The California Department of Education will be honoring the Romoland School District for their results-based school attendance improvement program at the California Association of Supervisors of Child Welfare and Attendance (CASCWA) Conference this April. The Romoland school counselors support attendance within the district through attending SARB meetings, creating interventions of students, and connecting students and families to resources. Romoland serves as a model for California for their outstanding and innovative program that reduces chronic absenteeism. Congratulations!
March 2017 — Out of 3,200 high schools across the nation, Norte Vista ranked 6th highest for student use of the Up Next College Access Tool. Up Next was launched through Better Make Room, an organization that supports Michelle Obama’s Reach Higher Initiative. Students can sign up by texting “COLLEGE” to 44044, and they receive text support on the college search process, applications, federal student aid, and even student loan repayment. The Norte Vista School Counseling Department promoted Up Next on their campus, enrolling students during classroom lessons and individual student planning meetings. What a huge accomplishment to be 6th in the nation – congratulations, Norte Vista!!!
March 2017 — School Counselors from the Alvord Unified School District presented about their comprehensive school counseling program to the school board this spring. Sharing services provided at every level, parent engagement, testimonials, and student outcomes the school counselors discussed the work they are doing and impact they are making. Their presentation received positive feedback from district officials and school board members. Alvord is continuing to support school counseling services for all students, beginning at the elementary level. Congratulations on showcasing your successful school counseling program!
March 2017 — Congratulations to Clearwater Elementary School and their amazing school counselor, Corina Johnson, for hosting their first College & Career Day! School counselor Homero Magaña inspired Clearwater students with his personal story From the Rancho to the White House, which he has given at various national conferences. More than 600 students at Clearwater participated in the event, and many came up to Homero after his presentation, saying they were inspired to attend Harvard, SDSU, UC Riverside, and UCLA. Congratulations on your hard work for coordinating a day of inspiration, Corina!
March 2017 — Over 100 school counselors and administrators from Indiana visited schools throughout San Diego and Riverside Counties to learn more about comprehensive school counseling. School counselors hosted student panels, results presentations, core curriculum classroom lessons, campus tours, and administrative presentations, focusing on the work of school counselors to support student success.
